Northern Digital was incorporated in 1981 by University of Waterloo graduates with the objective to design and manufacture custom scientific instrumentation. NDI has specialized in precision 3D motion measurement products since the introduction of the WATSMART in 1983. With the introduction of the OPTOTRAK in 1989, NDI became recognized as a world leader in the design and manufacture of optical 3D measurement equipment.

NDI's OPTOTRAK employs active marker technology to precisely measure rapid, complex motions of objects in three-dimensional space. In addition to determining the 3D position of single markers, the OPTOTRAK is able to measure the position and orientation of rigid objects. This ability enables the tracking of probes for digitizing and reference objects to maintain a constant measurement coordinate system.

NDI has two models of the OPTOTRAK system, the OPTOTRAK 3020 and the OPTOTRAK RH-2020. These systems are used world-wide across numerous and diverse fields including gait analysis, ergonomics, medical device tracking, aeronautics, robotics, virtual reality, reverse engineering, and motion capture.

In 1996, NDI introduced a new product, the POLARIS Optical Tracking System. The POLARIS is currently being used in medical device tracking applications and it is being investigated for use in robotic metrology. Engineered specifically for digitizing and tracking rigid objects, the POLARIS is a smaller, lighter and less accurate alternative to the OPTOTRAK.

An ongoing commitment to research and development, a creative approach to problem solving, and the continued exceptional support of our existing customers contribute to Northern Digital's reputation as a leading innovator in the area of motion measurement.
